Activity Level Guide

This is an indicator for the physical challenge level of activities included in this trip. Trips with easier activity level ratings can be customized to include more challenging activity options, but not vice-versa.

Ride Comfort Guide

Many remote destinations, especially in the hills, are accessible only by road transport. Although we employ taxis that offer superior comfort, we have less influence over the road conditions. Ride Comfort is an indicator for both the length of the car journeys and the road conditions.

Trip Style Guide

This is an indicator for the class of accommodations and transportation choices for the trip. While well-developed tourism destinations offer a wide range of choices from basic to luxury, many offbeat destinations provide a more limited range.

Kerala

About the region

map of Keraladistrict map of Kerala

Kerala, tagged as "God's own Country", is India's most south-western state with the highest amount of literacy. It also played an important role in history as a gateway for the spice trade. Kerala has one of the best tourism infrastructures in the country and is popular for its ancient art forms, Ayurvedic treatments, backwaters, greenery, coffee/tea and spice plantations and wildlife. Geographically, the landscapes range from hill ranges (Western Ghats) along its eastern border to coastal plains along the west.

Northern Kerala hosts the vibrant port town of Calicut and the magical hills and adjoining forests of Wayanad. In addition to being home to numerous coffee, tea and spice plantations, Wayanad also offers the nature-lover plenty of getaways, from hikes up to its many peaks to treks to pristine waterfalls that abound in the region. Its forests are also home to numerous mammals, including elephants and tigers.

Central Kerala has many historic and culturally-rich towns and is also where the traditional medicine of Ayurveda is best preserved and practiced. The region is home to exclusive art and craft forms, ancient temples & murals, magnificent backwaters, spice plantations, thick jungles, and successful tribal resettlement projects.

About the region

Goa is India's smallest state with the highest per capita income in the country. It is a well known tourist destination, most popular for its beaches and Portuguese influence. While our trips here do justice to these attributes, we also explore its less popular but equally spectacular side: lush green villages along the 'Konkan' coastal belt with a distinctive culture and cuisine, and the incredibly biodiverse forests and hills of the Western Ghats.

Uttarakhand

About the region

map of Uttarakhand

Uttarakhand is a newly formed state (2000) and is divided into two main regions: Garhwal and Kumaon. The state is over 90% mountainous and has over 60% forest cover. Most of the northern parts of the state are part of the Greater Himalayan ranges, covered by the peaks and glaciers, while the lower foothills were densely forested till they were heavily exploited, first by the British log merchants and later by forest contractors.

The unique Himalayan ecosystem plays host to a large number of animals, plants and rare herbs. Its glaciers also give birth to two of India's mightiest rivers: the Ganges and the Yamuna. These mountains are sacred to the Hindus, as evidenced by the numerous pilgrimage centres across the state. The state is also well known as the birthplace of many community-led environmental movements, the Chipko movement being the most prominent among them.

Our trips currently explore the following regions of the state:

district map of Uttarakhand

Tons Valley

Tons is a perennial river and flows in the Garhwal region to the north-west of Uttarakhand. It is famous for rafting in parts of the river and some lovely treks to alpine meadows, the most popular being Har-Ki-Doon, a destination on one of our trips. The region is populated by residents who claim to be descendants from the clans belonging to the epic Mahabharata. The unusual practice of polyandry, originating from the epic, is still followed by many here. People here are predominantly engaged in agriculture.

Doon Valley

Located in the foothills of the Garhwal Himalayas, the valley hosts Dehradun (the state capital of Uttarakhand) and also Mussoorie and Landour, hill stations developed by the British for summer retreats. Our trips in this region usually start in Dehradun, where we'll meet with an award-winning social enterprise that is working and doing research in the field of organic farming and biodiversity conservation.

Bhagirathi Valley

Bhagirathi river, also in Garhwal, is the source stream of the Ganges and the seat of several important pilgrimage centers. Our trips in this region will trace the river and explore some lovely treks, quaint villages and magical alpine meadows around it.

Kumaon

Located in the South Eastern part of the state, Kumaon has a variety of landscapes with altitudes ranging from 200 to 7000 mts. Our trip in this region will explore the rolling hills of the lesser Himalayas with magnificent views of distant peaks and the Corbett Tiger Reserve forests.

Himachal Pradesh

About the region

map of Himachal Pradesh

Himachal Pradesh, as its name suggests, is a "region of snowy mountains", with elevations range from about 350 meters (1,148 ft) to 7,000 meters (22,966 ft). It has several perennial rivers criss-crossing the region, which are important sources of drinking water and irrigation for the plains below.

For the traveler, the state offers an incredible array of sights to behold: ancient temples, exhilarating treks, fruit orchards and wild flowers, vibrantly colored birds, elusive alpine mammals, quaint villages, intricate crafts, Buddhist monasteries, to name a few. Villages in the state ooze with charm and warm hospitality that will be hard to spot in any other part of the country.

Our trips in the state currently explore three very special districts of the state: Chamba, Kangra and Kullu.

district map of Himachal Pradesh

Chamba

Poised in the north-western part of the state, this district was the most ancient kingdom in the northern hills of India. The region is home to several ancient temples, numerous treks and lovely arts and crafts. The Chamba "Rumaal" (handkerchief"), with embroidery that mirrors one side to the other, is a classic souvenir.

Kangra

Adjoining Chamba, Kagra is famous for its ancient relics and artwork, especially Kangra miniature paintings. Dharamshala, the most popular town in Kangra, is the home of Dalai Lama and the Tibetan Government in exile. We will explore this region through its Buddhist institutions (including monasteries and an art preservation center), ruins of an ancient temple, treks, village walks, camping and a visit to an award-winning social enterprise.

Kullu

The district is a feast for the active traveler and history buff. We explore the region through its intricately carved stone and wood temples, exhilarating treks, camping near sacred lakes and rustic rambles.
